New York at Christmas 2026: The Tree, the Window Displays and Holiday Markets on a Budget
New York, アメリカ合衆国

The Rockefeller Center tree is 76 feet of Norway spruce under a 900-pound Swarovski crystal star. The lighting is on 2 December 2026, viewing hours start at 5 a.m., and watching from street level costs nothing. Over at Bryant Park, the rink has let people onto the ice without an admission charge since it opened on 28 October.

Rockefeller Center and the Fifth Avenue facades

Go before 8 a.m. and you have the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree (Midtown) almost to yourself. The spruce stands 50 feet wide above the sunken plaza rink, with the gilded Prometheus statue below it and the winged-angel trumpeters of the Channel Gardens flanking the walk in. Viewing runs to midnight and the tree stays up to 9 January 2027. On peak December evenings the police put out barriers and run one-way crowd control, which is reason enough to come at dawn.

Across the road, the Saks Fifth Avenue Holiday Light Show (611 Fifth Avenue) turns the whole ten-storey limestone facade of the flagship into a projection screen, lights racing across the stone in time to music. The show and the windows launch on 23 November and run 5 to 11 p.m. nightly, repeating every 10 minutes. Stand on the Rockefeller Center side of Fifth Avenue for the full height of it; six animated windows sit at street level underneath. It is the biggest free spectacle in Midtown and it is over in 10 minutes, so watch it from a spot where the tree is already glowing behind you.

St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York
St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York

St. Patrick's Cathedral (Fifth Avenue) is five minutes' walk from both and free to enter, with visiting hours from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and a donation box by the door. The white marble Gothic Revival nave runs under 330-foot twin spires, Christmas trees and a large Neapolitan-style nativity stand by the altar, and candlelight picks out the side chapels. Keep quiet if you arrive during a service. Seats for Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve are allocated by lottery rather than by queueing, so enter well ahead if that is the service you want.

Two blocks from the crowds, the Lotte New York Palace Villard Courtyard tree (Madison Avenue) is 35 feet of red and gold baubles in a gated stone courtyard, wrapped on three sides by the brownstone arcades of the 1880s Villard Mansions, with Madison Avenue traffic beyond the arch. The courtyard stays open to the public through the season and costs nothing to walk into. No lighting date has been published for 2026; in past years the tree has gone up at the start of December. This is a working hotel forecourt, so keep it to quick photos.

Macy's windows and the Santaland reservation

The Broadway-facing plate-glass windows at Macy's Herald Square (Herald Square) debut on 19 November, filled with mechanical figures and the Blue Hippopotamus, a parade character from 1931. You watch them from the pavement for nothing, and nobody checks anything. Inside, the wooden escalators climb to an eighth-floor Santaland of candy-striped arches, a toy-train tunnel and a throne room.

Santaland runs from 27 November to 24 December and costs nothing, but every single person needs an advance online reservation. Book your whole party onto one slot or you will be split up and sent in separately. Free reservations open on 20 November and are then released rolling seven days ahead, so set a reminder a week before the date you want. The new sensory-friendly sessions this year are also free. A premium group package for up to eight people is $250.

Bryant Park's free rink and the library next door

At Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park (Midtown), glass-and-white jewel box kiosks line the park's tree-lined allees around a 17,000-square-foot open-air rink, with Midtown skyscrapers and the Beaux-Arts wall of the public library rising straight behind the ice. Entry to the village is free, and so is admission to the rink, the only one in the city that charges nothing to skate. Bring your own skates and the whole evening costs you nothing at all.

Skate hire is $19 to $64 depending on the date and time, and slots go online in advance; book yours before you travel if you want several of you on the ice together. The market runs to 3 January 2027 and the rink holds on to 28 February 2027.

The New York Public Library, Stephen A. Schwarzman Building (Fifth Avenue) is 90 seconds from the kiosks and it is warm. A 22-foot Christmas tree stands under the marble arches of Astor Hall, and Dickens's own copy of A Christmas Carol is on show in the painted McGraw Rotunda, which makes it the most Christmassy free exhibit in Midtown. Entry is free every day and you do not need to book for the public halls. Use Patience and Fortitude, the stone lions on the Fifth Avenue steps, as your meeting point, and keep voices down in the reading rooms.

Union Square's 200 makers

Union Square Holiday Market (south plaza, Union Square Park) fills the plaza with a dense grid of red-and-white striped canvas stall roofs, bare plane trees overhead and 14th Street traffic behind. Some 200 independent makers trade there from 12 November to 24 December. Entry is free and there are no tickets to buy.

Come on a weekday evening. Saturdays are shoulder-to-shoulder, and this is the cheapest market in the city for eating and shopping, with none of the Midtown mark-up.

The Grand Central fair and the holiday train show

Grand Central Holiday Fair (Vanderbilt Hall) sets 40 artisan booths out under vaulted Guastavino arches and tall arched windows, between cream marble and brass chandeliers, with commuters streaming past to the Main Concourse. Admission is free and nobody sells a ticket. It runs from 9 November to 24 December, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. You can walk the whole hall in 20 minutes between trains, and it is the fallback for a cold or wet night, though it gets tight at rush hour.

Off the shuttle passage, next to the Station Master's Office, the New York Transit Museum Holiday Train Show (Grand Central Gallery) runs a 34-foot two-level O-gauge layout across a small shop-front gallery. Lionel Metro-North sets and vintage subway cars loop past a miniature Grand Central, and a Polar Express runs a snowy North Pole diorama. It is free and walk-in, now in its 23rd edition. The show usually opens in mid-November and runs into February, but the 2026 opening date had not been posted at the end of October, so confirm it on the museum site before making a special trip. The gallery is small, and a large group should split and go in waves.

Free carols on Christmas Eve

Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine, New York
Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine, New York

The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine (Morningside Heights) is a colossal unfinished Gothic cathedral whose 600-foot nave disappears into darkness, the Great Rose window above the west end, rows of candles below and the choir singing from the stone crossing. Nine Lessons and Carols is at 4 p.m. on 24 December, with a choir-and-orchestra service at 10.30 p.m. that night and another at 10.30 a.m. on Christmas Day.

All of it is free and none of it is ticketed, so you can turn up at the door. Arrive 45 minutes before the Christmas Eve services or you will be standing at the back. This is the best free music in the city at Christmas.

The harbour on the Staten Island Ferry

The Staten Island Ferry is a big orange double-ended boat that crosses New York Harbour with the Statue of Liberty passing close off the starboard side and Lower Manhattan's lit towers shrinking behind the open stern deck. It has been fare-free since 1997, you board without a ticket, and it runs every 15 to 30 minutes all winter, around the clock.

The crossing takes 25 minutes. Sit on the right-hand side heading to Staten Island. The terminal is warm while you wait, which matters more in December than it sounds.

Dyker Heights and Arthur Avenue

Dyker Heights Christmas Lights (83rd to 86th Street between 11th and 13th Avenue, Brooklyn) is 100 decorated houses on wide residential streets, detached homes buried under animated reindeer, 15-foot inflatable Santas, rows of toy soldiers and nutcrackers on the lawns, with palm-sized bulbs covering every hedge and porch column. The lights go on the day after Thanksgiving, 27 November, and run to 30 December, from dusk to 9 or 10 p.m.

Skip the paid coach tours. The streets are public and free to walk, the D train runs to 71st Street and the subway fare is $3 each way. These are private homes, so stay on the pavement and never block a driveway.

The Bronx Little Italy Christmas tree lighting (Ciccarone Park, Arthur Avenue) is on Saturday 5 December, 4 to 6 p.m., with trays of Italian cookies and cups of hot chocolate handed out and Victorian-dressed a cappella carollers working the pavement. Old Italian shopfronts and the indoor Arthur Avenue Retail Market stand behind the park. The event is free, and the carollers keep roaming the neighbourhood on Thursdays and weekend evenings until Christmas.

It is 40 minutes from Grand Central and it is a local Christmas rather than a Midtown one. Cheap bakery and market food sits on the same street. Book a table if you plan to eat properly afterwards; the restaurants fill through December.

A cheap round at McSorley's

McSorley's Old Ale House (East 7th Street, East Village) has sawdust on the plank floor, a potbelly stove, and a century of yellowed newspaper clippings and wishbones on the walls. The ale comes light or dark and arrives as two small mugs slammed down together on a scarred wooden table, $8 the round. The saloon has been there since 1854 and a night in it costs a fraction of a festive restaurant bill.

It opens daily from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m., and from noon on Sunday. Tables are communal, the room is loud and cash is welcome. Nobody takes reservations, so go before 7 p.m. at weekends or you will queue on East 7th Street.

Booking and closing days

Three things here need booking and nothing else does: a Santaland reservation for every person in your party, a Midnight Mass lottery entry and a skate-hire slot at the rink. The markets and Santaland all stop on Christmas Eve, while the tree, the lights and the ferry carry on past it.
